It our generation's time for a gut check. Much like the generation that determined whether Hitler would be stopped, or that African Americans would gain equal access to the American Dream, it is this generation's time to do the same.
The questions at hand to this generation are plain, simple but just as tough as those that proceeded it and those that will follow.
Do we share the burden of balancing our own budgets, look after our own families and neighbors, or do we push that burden to the government for the sake of convenience. How you answer that question says much about how you view the world, your town, your neighborhood and your family.
During the Great Depression, our ancestors had to balance their budgets, because borrowing money was not available or extremely difficult. They had to depend on each other and their families, because there were no government "safety nets". They sacrificed and shared because of a moral compass, the Holy Spirit, prodding them to do the right thing, to give unselfishly, work tirelessly and pray constantly. This got them through a very difficult time.
During WWII, our ancestors also had to balance their budgets as all monies not necessary for family operation was used in the war effort. Rationing of Milk, Eggs, Steel, Rubber, Gasoline and more was everyday life. This group sacrificed as the previous generation, they gave unselfishly, worked tirelessly and prayed constantly. Again, they persevered.
In the 60's, America was involved in the Vietnam War, African Americans were second class citizens, and Americans found themselves with new affluence, new freedoms and technology growing at an astounding rate. "Safety Nets" began during this era, with the expansion of Social Security and much more during Johnson's "Great Society". Civil Rights legislation was passed and America embarked on a new uncharted territory. We became more of a nation of national dependence and moved away from our local interdependency. Church membership dropped and we became a me first society. The era of "sex, drugs and rock-n-roll" was in full swing. Rebelling became "cool" and established morals and guidelines were questioned and ignored. America survived and adapted. Having government take liberties and monies from us in the form of higher taxes was permitted in return for relinquishing out moral obligations to our neighbors and family. The "nanny" state was in it's infancy. Many were approving of that, because we had money, plenty of money, and the economy was booming.
The tail end of the 70's, brought us high inflation and economic hardships. Gas rationing, 20% interest rates and high unemployment were the tale of the tape. American turned to Ronald Reagan. Who retuned to conservative ideas of limited federal government, family centered values, and personal responsibility. The economy recovered and wealth began to flow through America again.
The 90's brought us larger social programs, expansion of Medicare, more government regulation and oversight in the areas of workplace, education, environment and manufacturing. Again taxes were raised to pay for this expansion, however much of what was to come was not paid for.
Now we are facing record government debt, unprecedented depreciation of homes, tight credit and a growing number of people dependent on the Federal Government for their existence.
So where do we go? Do we move toward the center again? Do we expand government and let them take more a role in our lives? Do we scrap these social programs and move toward "privatizing" assistance through our churches and synagogues?
This generation has a gut check to make. Right now the lines are drawn. Citizens of larger cities highly incorporated areas are on the side of government growth, and those that live in the rural areas are on the side of personal responsibility. Where does this end?
Congressional gridlock and a growing discontent with our government as a whole and a realization that what we have been doing does not work, is giving many Americans an "A-Hah" moment. A chance to stop and take a look at what is going on. Many are back praying again and trying to give their children a sense of the morals that drove their ancestors. While still many others are teaching their children that man is the answer, and that God has no place in our lives Still many others say they believe in God, but live their lives as if he does not exist.
America needs to make a choice, and that choice may be to go in different directions. Let many of the "conservative states" go their way, while many of the "liberal" states push forward with more government intervention, higher taxes and a reduction in freedoms.
If you read my posts, you know my options. I am a person who believes that America is a Judeo-Christian society based on a common belief in God and morally obligated to each other through the teaching of the Bible. If more people would return to their roots, then things would be corrected more quickly. Right now doing nothing is doing more harm than doing something. Americans need to understand that only with a shared sacrifice can we achieve. We cannot redistribute the assets of some to make others happy. There must be a way to allow hard working people to gain an economic advantage. It causes us all to strive a little more. The competitive nature of ourselves is what drives our economy. So by all means, take a long look at what you believe and why. It may be the last choice you get to make.
